Contrary to the initial impression that the Thursday morning pipeline fire at Ijegun, a suburb of Lagos, was caused by pipeline explosion, WESTERN POST can report that the development was the handiwork of some armed hoodlums.
Some gunmen were said to have moved to Ijegun in about five tankers to steal the fuel as usual.
They positioned the tankers close to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation pipeline in the area ready to burst open the line and scoop petrol.
But some vigilant pipeline security men accosted and attacked them, resulting in some exchanges.
They exchanged gunshots, but it was learnt that it was when the security men were overpowering them that the hoodlums shot at the tankers and one of them exploded.
The explosion sent some residents of the area scampering for safety, leading to pandemonium as they were unsure of what was happening.
Some hurriedly vacated their houses and headed for some adjoining areas in a bid to avoid the backlash from a pipeline explosion.
But thank God, the situation did not result in the explosion of the pipeline.
