Fadahunsi: Why Jonathan Lost March 28 Presidential Election

By Tunde Oyekola in Osogbo

Former Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State, Prince Francis Fadahunsi, has shed light on why the party’s presidential candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan, lost the last Presidential poll held on March 28, 2015 in the country.

Fadahunsi, who was the senatorial candidate of PDP for Osun East, said the outgoing president lost the election because he failed to heed wise counsel given to him by some elders of the party.

According to the former Customs boss, he and other prominent Nigerians sometimes last year advised the President to drop Architect Namadi Sambo as Vice President and replace him with former Kebbi State governor, Alhaji Adamu Aliero.

But against “wise counsel” President Jonathan stuck to Arch. Sambo, even when it was obvious the likes of Adamu Aliero, having been empowered during the late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua presidency were in control of the major political blocs in the North.

Speaking with newsmen in Osogbo on Thursday, Fadahunshi said: “I went to the Presidential Villa sometimes in March last year to confer with Mr. President on how to move PDP forward. That day he was locked in a meeting with the seven aggrieved PDP governors but I told the First Lady that they might end up being the first executive couple to be booted out of power and also go to jail.

“But the First Lady said I was cursing them. I told her that Mr. President must immediately call Adamu Aliero and seek his help. I also warned her that Mr. President must act fast because Aliero, with whom I served in the Customs and Dahiru, Manga and the likes would be key to his re-election because of the huge resources in their disposal.”

He added: “ I also called Aliero immediately to secure his consent and he agreed to help but for more than  three months after, Jonathan did not call the man and refused all warnings not to allow the governors in the then “New PDP” to leave the party.

“Mr. President’s non-chalant attitude to the party that built him and made him President has now led him to destroy that same party,” he said.

Fadahunsi also queried the decision of President Jonathan to congratulate Gen. Buhari when voting was still being collated. “Why in a hurry? The same way he congratulated the hawk that carried his baby in Edo, Ondo and others? That is the more reason I believe Baba Obasanjo is angry with Mr. President.

“Why will PDP not challenge the 1.9 million votes from Kano? Jonathan I believe is clearly working to kill PDP,” he said.

Fadahunsi also warned those leaving PDP without consultation, adding that the reality would soon dawn on them that the party could not accommodate everybody and urged loyalists to work towards repositioning PDP to serve as effective opposition to shape the democratic process.
