Ibadan –  Pastor Tunde Bakare of the Latter Rain Assembly says the sacrifice of late Lt.-Col. Adekunle Fajuyi, first Governor of old Western Region, should not be forgotten. According to him, Fajuyi should be celebrated as a national hero.

Bakare made the call at event organised by the Yoruba Think-Tank to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Fajuyi’s demise in Ibadan on Friday.

He praised the courage and gallantry of Fajuyi, who he said died for the unity of Nigeria.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Fajuyi was killed alongside former Head of State, Maj.-Gen. Aguiyi Ironsi, on July 29, 1966 in Ibadan.

The former Western Region governor refused to surrender Ironsi, who was on an official visit to Ibadan, to coup plotters attempting to overthrow the government.

Bakare said Fajuyi demonstrated that a leader was not to be an Igbo, Hausa or Yoruba, but a person who would rather die than betray the trust reposed in him.

Bakare said Fajuyi paid the supreme price for which the country was now enjoying.
Prof. Niyi Osundare said Fajuyi was an exemplary leader whose story must be passed from generation to generation.

Osundare said if Fajuyi didn’t voluntarily die with his boss, the country would have experienced a serious regional dispute.

He called for the reintroduction of history in schools for unborn generations to learn of the people and county’s past and know the exploits of heroes like Fajuyi.

Mr. Wole Olanipekun (SAN) said Nigeria needed to redefine it priority to be able to move forward by celebrating those worthy to be celebrated.

Olanipekun called on the country’s leaders to be patriotic and have the unity of Nigeria uppermost in their dealings.

Others present were Gov. Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Majority leader of the House of Representatives, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila among others. (NAN)
