A 54-year-old former casual worker of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria Plc. (PHCN), Mr. Kunle Ibitayo, who had been parading himself as a marketer for the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company Plc. (IBEDC) has been apprehended by members of Ojoo Community, Oyo State, while attempting to obtain money under false pretence, from unsuspecting customers of IBEDC within the area.

He revealed that he had been engaged in the criminal activity for the past 10 years and was able to dupe unsuspecting customers of the company due to his knowledge of the inner workings of IBEDC operations, which he acquired working as a casual worker with defunct PHCN.

Following the arrest of the impostor, the management of IBEDC has assured the general public and its valued customers that the suspect will be prosecuted and that this will send a strong warning to others involved in nefarious activities of this nature.

In addition, “IBEDC has immediately directed its monitoring team, working in conjunction with the Nigeria Police, community vigilantes and other security operatives to comb every nook and cranny of its franchise area to ensure that it is free of these saboteurs, to ensure our customers are no longer defrauded.”

“IBEDC would like to inform the general public that no marketer has the authorization to collect cash from any customer. Any person demanding cash for electricity services should be reported to the nearest police station or IBEDC business hub.

“IBEDC is also appealing to its customers to be vigilant in protecting electrical installations and infrastructure within their communities and to imbibe the culture of paying for services through banks and designated payment centers at the Business Hubs. This will prevent physical cash collection by anybody and the temptations associated with it, “a statement from the company’s corporate affairs unit stated.

The statement added that, IBEDC will henceforth bring to bear the full weight of the law on any offender, be it a vandal, an illegal connector and meter by-passer as the company is a responsive and responsible institution geared towards sustaining the welfare and goodwill of all its customers and is determined to serve them better across its franchise area.

Items recovered from Ibitayo include several IBEDC electricity bills from all the Business Hubs in Oyo Zone, which he was said to have removed from the houses of unsuspecting customers after they had been distributed by genuine marketers of IBEDC.
