The family of a student of Lagos State Polytechnic allegedly raped by some policemen attached to Ikorodu Police Station in Igbogbo area of Lagos State has petitioned the Inspector General of Police IGP Suleiman Abba over the incident.
The victim, whose name was given as Abigail Ojewo, was said to have collapsed inside the police cell after she was allegedly tortured and raped by some policemen.
A source told WESTERN POST that Abigail was tortured by the policemen for protesting against the release of a suspect she had lodged a complaint against at the station.
Her hands were said to have been tied to her back. She claimed she was raped and tortured inside the cell by five policemen until she collapsed.
She said the policemen raped her in turn overnight in a single cell at the station.
According to her, the policemen later rushed her to a hospital to revive her but that some concerned residents of the area who were angry about what happened have moved her to another hospital where she is now receiving treatment.
The 27-years-old student said she had reported a case of burglary and threat to life against her former boyfriend and the matter was assigned to a policeman identified as Fatai to investigate.
She said later another officer was asked to investigate the case. The probe, according to her, led to the arrest of the boyfriend who was later released.
She said not quite long after the investigation commenced, the policemen started demanding sex from her.
They threatened that if she did not allow them to have sex with her, they would not continue with the investigation.
She said she reported the matter to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Remi, a Superintendant of Police (SP), who scolded his men and assigned the matter to another policemen, this time a sergeant, who re-arrested the boyfriend.
She said not quite long after the boyfriend was re-arrested, he was released. According to her, the boyfriend later came to her house to mock her, telling her he had the police in his pocket.
Angered by the action of the police, she went back to the station to complain again.
But she claimed the police insulted her and in the process of exchanging words with them, they beat her and detained her in the cell where they allegedly raped and tortured her until she collapsed and was taken to hospital.
When WP Correspondent visited the station, a police source confirmed that Abigel was the complainant in the matter and that she was not satisfied with the way her case was handled.
The source said the matter resulted in a quarrel and Abigel was beaten up and detained.
“The policemen are now turning the case upside down and putting the blame on her, and not knowing where Abigel is receiving treatment,” the source said.
The policemen claimed they were looking for her and that they wanted to charge her to court for assault.
The family of the rape victim has, however, appealed to the IGP Abba to wade into the matter and order a thorough investigation.
When WP contacted Lagos State Police Command Spokesman Kenneth Nwosu, a Deputy Superintendant of Police (DSP), he said he was not aware of the matter but promised to get back to the correspondent. But he was yet to do so at the time of filing the report.
