Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi has emerged as the new Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), with Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State as the Vice Chairman.
They will lead the forum till 2021.
In a unanimous decision at the Forum’s meeting on Wednesday night in Abuja, the forum members collectively arrived at the decision.
The withdrawal of Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai paved the way for Fayemi’s unanimous election.
In a statement signed by the outgoing Chairman of the NGF, Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara State, said the forum also expressed concern over the recent guidelines issued by the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit, NFIU, which seeks to impose restrictions on the powers of states and local governments.
They said the restrictions would be detrimental to Basic Universal Education Programme, Primary Health Care, as well as payment of primary School Teachers in the Governors’ respective states.
The governors also deliberated on the issue of National Security situation and resolved to hold a meeting with the President to find real and lasting solutions to the security challenges facing the country.
Governor Yari has been chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum since June, 2015.
