Head coach of Nigeria’s Women U-17 side the Flamingoes, Nikiyu Bala, has expressed happiness with the performance of her girls in the team’s opening match of the FIFA U-17 Women World Cup holding in Costa Rica.
The Nigerian girls, early Monday morning, rallied to a 2-1 win over China in a Group D game to kickstart their World Cup campaign on a positive note and the sweat merchant said he was happy with the outcome of the encounter.
Although he admitted that the result put the Nigerians second on the log behind Canada who whitewashed Colombia 4-0 in the group’s opening match, Nikiyu said wining the first match in a competition of this magnitude was very vital.
“Opening matches are always hard and I thought our game today was really tough. However, I’m happy with the win and proud of the good performance my girls have just put in. China’s good display in the second half didn’t surprise me because this is the nature of this tournament. Performances gets better as the games progress. I’m expecting my team to find their best form in their upcoming fixtures. We played well today but, for sure, there is still room for improvement,” he said.
The Nigerians next match is against Colombia on the 19th of March.
