Folarin Campaign Organisation Rejects Akeju as Oyo REC

The Teslim Kolawole Folarin 2015 Gubernatorial
Organisation, has
rejected the re-deployment of Mr. Rufus Akeju
as the Resident
Electoral Commissioner for Oyo State.
The organisation said Mr. Akeju’s choice for
Oyo State is totally
unacceptable, going by his antecedents, which
it said is well known.
Akeju, it went on, was known to be a former SA
to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu
and a card-carrying member of the defunct
Action Congress of Nigeria
(ACN), adding it was on the basis of this and
many other reasons that
it rejected his re-deployment to the State.
In a press statement by its Director General,
Hon. Asimiyu Niran
Alarape in Ibadan yesterday, it declared that
Akeju’s re-deployment to
Oyo State by the Prof. Attahiru Jega-led
Independent National
Electoral Commission (INEC) was an error,
adding “It must be corrected
immediately to avoid a backlash”.
“In civilized climes, an embattled and tainted
personality like Akeju
ought to have been shown the way out or
recalled to INEC’s
headquarters to handle less sensitive
assignments if the commission
must retain him at all cost”, the statement said.
The statement said it is a general knowledge
that Akeju’s relationship
and rapport with Senator Bola Tinubu and the
All Progressive Congress
(APC) are too well known and calls to question
the impartiality of
Akeju to continue to work in INEC as a Resident
Folarin Campaign Organisation stressed that the
continued retention of
Akeju in INEC calls to question the
independence of the Electoral
Commission, this fact it said led Osun PDP to
institute a suit against
INEC, which forced the commission to
temporarily suspend him (Akeju)
from supervising the last gubernatorial election
in Osun State.
“We have no doubt in the ability of Prof.
Attahiru Jega to deliver in
2015 a credible and generally acceptable
election and we believe that
there are few very committed and unflinching
officials of REC cadre in
the commission”, adding ” What we are asking for in Oyo State is a
credible and unbiased umpire”, Alarape said.
According to Alarape, “we do not want a
discredited INEC Commissioner
who is capable of causing crisis in our State”,
saying ” Oyo State is
too volatile for an Akeju experimentation.
