Fuel Price Hike Strike Paralyses Activities in Ilorin

By Mosunmola Ayobami, Ilorin

As Nigeria Labour Congress ,joined by some other private organizations, begin a seven-day warning strike over fuel price hike from N86:50k to N145 announced by Federal government on Wednesday last week, daily activities have been crippled in Ilorin, Kwara State capital.

Federal and state government staffs downed tools beginning from 12:00pm Wednesday following the deadlock in the negotiations between the government and a fraction of NLC led by Comrade Ayuba Wabba.

Primary and secondary students in public schools were seen returning home while banks in Ilorin metropolis were under lock and key leading to long queues of stranded customers waiting to cash at any available Automatic Teller Machines (ATM) in the city.

The Kwara State House of Assembly too was not left out of the strike as security officers manning the entrance to the assembly complex were sending people back.

When one of the security men at the gate was asked why the planned sitting of the House was cancelled, he said it was as a result of the strike.

“Didn’t you hear it on radio that there is strike so the House’s sitting slated for today has been cancelled.” the officer said.

Reacting to the development in a telephone chat, Kwara State NLC Chairman, Comrade Yekini Agunbiade, said the state Council is on the same line with the national body of NLC in pressing home its demand.

“Yes, Kwara NLC too has joined the national body led by Comrade Ayuba Waba, We had a peaceful protest today along Radio Kwara, GRA, down to some other parts of the city so all civil servants in Kwara are on strike,” he said.
