Ivorien international and Man City midfielder Yaya
Toure on Thursday night emerged the GLO/CAF 2013 African Footballer of
the Year.
He defeated Nigerian international and Chelsea star
John Obi Mikel, who was widely expected by many Nigerian to bag the
prestigious award.
Also beaten to the award at the award celebration held
in Lagos was Ivorien skipper Didier Drogba.
But it was not a bad night at all for Nigeria as the
awards generally were virtually a Nigerian affair.
For instance, the Super Eagles won the National Team
of the Year, the Nigerian U-17 team Golden Eaglets won the National Youth
Team
of the Year while Eagles coach Stephen Keshi also won as Coach of the
Year.
Mikel, striker Emenike and goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama
all got conspicuous places in the African Team of the Year, with their
coach
Stephen Keshi as Coach of the Team of the Year.
Also, young star Kelechi Ihenacho won the Most
Promising Talent award while the Nigerian Supporters’ Club also smiled
home
with an award.
The prestigious CAF Platinum Award went to President
Goodluck Jonathan. Sports Minister Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi collected the
award
on behalf of President Jonathan.
