Good Reason Prevails as PDP Postpones National Convention

Good reason eventually prevailed as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Leaders on Wednesday postponed its national convention in Port Harcourt, Rivers State following a court order stopping the congress.

Justice Okon Abang of a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja had ordered that the convention be put on hold pending the determination of the suit instituted against the party by its factional Chairman, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff. He ordered the police to enforce the order and also directed INEC not to monitor the convention.

But another Judge of a Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt ordered PDP to continue with the convention.

And in a bewildering move to enforce the order of the Abuja Court, the police sealed up the venue of the convention on Wednesday and denied delegates access to the venue. The sealing up of the stadium was said to be on the orders of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris.

The PDP, however, after an emergency meeting in Port Harcourt resolved to postponed the convention. They further extended the mandate of the Senator Ahmed Makarfi’s National Caretaker Committee.

The postponement of the convention will allow room for more discussion with the factional Chairman Sheriff who has given his conditions for peace and reconciliation in PDP.
