The Zone 13 police headquarters, located in Ukpo, Anambra State, was on Monday attacked by and razed by unknown gunmen.
The attack, which reportedly took place in the morning led to pandemonium in the area as the gunmen reportedly opened fire on policemen before setting the place on fire.
The extent of damage has not been disclosed, but at three vehicles were razed by the ensuing inferno.
The Anambra State Police Command spokesman, Tochukwu Ikenga, said he could not provide details about the incident when contacted.
It would be recalled that a similar incident occurred two weeks ago, when the Imo State Police Command headquarters was razed by gunmen. That incident was blamed on agitators for the independent nation of Biafra.
Monday’s attack comes amid the growing security incidents in Anambra State, whose governorship election scheduled for November 6 is fast approaching.
Willie Obiano, the state governor, recently raised an alarm over the worsening security situation, saying the state was under siege by criminals.
“I call on everybody, irrespective of affiliations to come together and support government and security agencies to fight our common enemy. Those who seek to destroy what we have laboured to build must not be tolerated in any manner,” Obiano had said.
Apart from Anambra, other states in the south-east have been witnessing a spike in criminal attacks and targeted assault against security agencies.
The south-east governors had also launched a joint security outfit named Ebube Agu to curb the attacks, but not much has changed since they took the action.
