Herdsmen Are Actively Involved in Abduction Cases – Delta CP

The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, Mr. Zannah Ibrahim, on Tuesday blamed the rising cases of kidnapping and abduction in the state on the activities of suspected herdsmen who are collaborating with indigenes to carry out heinous crimes.

Ibrahim, who vowed to stem the ugly tide, also reiterated the command’s desire to end the frequent clashes between herdsmen and farmers in the state by partnering all stakeholders to maintain peace in the various communities in the state.

The CP, who was represented by CSP Aniete Eyoh, stated this at a one-day security summit organised by the Ughelli ‘A’ Division of the State Police Command in Ughelli.

He stated that the command was partnering the vigilantes and locals including traditional rulers in curbing crimes in the state.

Ibrahim said, “Herdsmen are actively involved in kidnapping and abduction cases. It is an issue that need to be addressed at a roundtable but the police are doing all they can to ensure that such a crime is stopped. We are allowing the local community to have a say in the decision making of the police and this promotes promptness of the police in responding to distress calls.”

He noted that aside kidnapping, the command had also received reports of sexual harassment and rape of women by herdsmen grazing in various communities in the state.

While adding that the police were doing their best to stem the tide, Ibrahim warned all parties to remain calm so as not to take the laws into their own hands.

Speaking at the summit, the lawmaker representing Ughelli Constituency I at the Delta State House of Assembly, Mr. Samuel Mariere, said the state was still reviewing the anti-grazing bill which had gone through a public hearing to tackle the issue of herdsmen menace in the state.

Mariere explained that, as lawmakers, they were elected to make laws for the well-being of the people of the state, noting that no government would watch its people being killed all in the name of grazing by herdsmen.
