The killing of a man simply identified as ‘Hamzat’ during a carnival in Igbaye, Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun State on Monday afternoon, has escalated to the destruction of properties.

It was gathered that a house, car, and about 14 motorcycles were burnt.

A resident popularly known as ‘Prof’ said that the killing has led to the destruction of properties belonging to the suspected killer of Hamzat.

He said: “It is true that the house of Oba Joseph Okunlola Morohunfoye was burnt because he was said to have led the group that caused the killing.

“A group organised carnival at Igbaye community junction and another group held a public health outreach at the roundabout, market square.

“The Commissioner of Police, Olawale Olokode, gave them the demarcation because of the royal tussle in the town.

“A Prince who has been laying claim to the throne popularly called Morohunfoye was going with Amotekun corps and DSS operatives on that Monday. When they got to Oluode compound where there was another celebration, he disrupted the programme, alleging that they mounted their tent on the road.

“They beat him because of that and that prompted one of the security operatives that followed him to shoot. The bullet hit one of the boys in the chest and another one sustained a gun injury at his neck.

“One of the Amotekun corps that followed Morohunfoye also beat one man with charm, that is where the problem started. People carried the corpse to his house but he has escaped through the back door.

“That is why they burnt his car that eventually affected his house. About 14 motorcycles were burnt.”

But, Morohunfoye described the incident as “a very terrible one, saying a traditional monarch doesn’t deserve such violent and mob attacks.

He said: “Unfortunately, security operatives have not made any arrests in connection with the crime of destroying the palace. The incident is so unfortunate, the police are yet to arrest anybody.

“The hoodlums destroyed everything in the palace. They burnt 10 motorcycles, they set all the palace ablaze, including two vehicles.”

Meanwhile, the state governor, Adegboyega Oyetola, has appealed to the people of Igbaye to give peace a chance and avoid further killing or destruction of properties in the community.

Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Funke Egbemode, who made the appeal on behalf of the government urged the aggrieved parties to put their interests aside and give peace a chance.

The state government directed security operatives to prevent further breakdown of law in the community.

The state government said: “Parents and guardians are enjoined to warn their wards and children not to allow themselves to be used as tools to foment trouble.

“We implore residents and citizens to channel their grievances to the appropriate authorities and resist the temptation of taking law into their own hands. It is better to talk about the issues causing controversies in the town, than to war over it.”

It was gathered that Oba Morohunfoye and Prince Abdul Ganiyu Oyeroka Oyenike, who was out of the town, had been fighting over the stool.
