HOW GUNMEN ATTACKED KOTON-KARFE PRISON, FREED 144 INMATES
Barely two years after the suspected gunmen attacked and freed prison inmates at Koton Karfe Prison, another gunmen again attacked, bombed the prison and released 144 inmates.
The Comptroller of Nigeria Prisons Services, Mr. Aminu Suley, who disclosed this while speaking with journalists at the premises of KotonKarfe federal prison, stated that external forces attacked the prison on sunday night. Suley explained that
the suspected hoodlums who came in large numbers around 10.00pm forcefully opened the main entrance and all cells to free the inmates.
He pointed out that the Prison, which accommodated 145 with 26 convicts and 119 awaiting trials now at large, had one prison inmate killed in the process.
The comptroller added that 12 prison inmates were re arrested,adding that many of them would soon be brought back to the prison.
Suley appealed to the state Governor Idris Wada and state judiciary to ensure the prisons are decongested, adding that some of the awaiting trials do not have business staying in the prison.
The state governor, Captain Wada who was at the prison expressed shock, anf stated that the state government would continue to provide adequate security for the citizens of the state.
The comptroller said the new prison yard, which has been under construction in the last 30 years, would be completed by the December this year.
Wada commended the security agents for their synergy, adding that when he was informed at about 10.00pm he quickly alerted the Director of State Services and Commander of Army Records both of who responded immediately.
The governor who lamented the poor condition of the prison environment, pledged that the state government would assist in the rehabilition of the prison and buy beddings and mattresses for inmates
Wada also called on the Minister of Interior Services to expedite action on the new prisons yard so as to relocate the inmate from the old prison, which was established in 1934.
The governor also pledged to use his prerogative of mercy to ease prison congestion .
WESTERN POST learnt that the hoodlums were said to have blocked the Lokoja -Koton Karfe and Abuja- Koton Karfe highway to prevent vehicular movement.
Sources hinted that after blocking the highway the hoodlums were shooting sporadically within the town, adding that they bombed the prison main entrance, which led to falling of the gate.
It was gathered that the gunmen forced the gates open with the aid of improvised explosive device and released all the prison inmates, while they operated for three and half hours.
Source disclosed further that residents of the town who ran for cover in the bush were said to have returned to their houses at about 2am after the hoodlums had completed their operation.
Some of inmates whose jail terms would soon be completed were said to have returned while others have escaped into thin air.
