How Senator Adeleke Died; Burial Fixed for 10 am Monday (April 24)

By Adeola Oladele

Grim details of how Senator Isiaka Adeleke representing Osun West Senatorial District in the National Assembly died have emerged.

Contrary to the earlier impression that he died of heart attack in the early hours of Sunday, April 23, WESTERN POST learnt that though he slept late at his country-home Ede, Osun State, he woke up in the morning complaining of stomach problems.

That was around 7 am, according to family sources. A doctor was then sent for who examined him and gave him an injection after taking his breakfast.

Senator Adeleke then said he was going in for a rest and that nobody should be allowed to disturb him.

But sources said not quite long after, the stomach problems got worse following which he was rushed to Bikets Hospital in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.

He later gave up the ghost at the hospital. This is contrary to the initial report that he died of heart attack.

It was, however, learnt that what surprised the family members and close aides around him was the fact that within hours of his death, his body had turned prickly black.

That was what set the alarm bell ringing and raised suspicion about the cause of his death and the need to probe deeper, said a family source.

This development then necessitated the decision by family members particularly his younger brother, Dr. Deji Adeleke, to order the conduct of an autopsy on his body.

WESTERN POST learnt that the corpse was immediately taken to Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso for autopsy.

The result of the autopsy on the cause of his death was being expected last night, amid the growing tension in Ede, his hometown and some parts of Osogbo, the state capital.

Meanwhile, the burial of the late Senator has been fixed tentatively for 10 am tomorrow, Monday April 24, at his country-home in Ede.

Senator Adeleke was 62 years old. Adeleke, the first Osun State civilian governor, died on the cusp of another governorship run in the state.

The next governorship poll in the state is due in 2018 and the former governor is ostensibly the leading aspirant in the race on APC platform.

Only on Saturday evening, Adeleke alias Serubawon attended two ceremonies by two of his associates in Iwo and Kuta, both in Osun State.

He was at the wedding of the daughter of former Chairman of Iwo Local Government, Engineer Lasun and later he also attended the burial ceremony of another former chairman of the town, Mr. Amobi.

The news of the death of Adeleke had thrown Ede, his hometown, into serious mourning. It has also raised a bout of protests, with some youths alleging that his death may not have been through natural causes.

Some of Adeleke’s associates were inconsolable. They could not even respond to repeated calls by WESTERN POST on Sunday afternoon.

Adeleke was first elected into the Senate in 2007 on Peoples Democratic Party platform. He lost the attempt to return in 2011 before he later contested in 2015 by which time he had crossed over to the All Progressives Congress (APC). He won his Osun West senatorial seat in the 2015 poll
