Ibogun-Olaogun Day: Amosun Seeks Support for Re-election

By Olayinka Kolawole

It was a yearly event and this year’s Ibogun-Olaogun Day held in Ifo, Ogun State, lived to its billing. It drew the attendance of the people of the area from far and near as well as Governor Ibikunle Amosun and former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Speaking at the event, Ogun State Governor Amosun urged the people of the state to shun violence as the 2015 election draws near, reminding them that in Ogun State, there is a standard to everything.

He asked them to support him for re-election so that they can reap more dividends of democracy. “In Ogun, we have a standard and you must live to that standard, you must behave peacefully and shun all forms of violence in the election. We must show the whole world we have a standard,” he told the people.

Former President Obasanjo, who is also the Balogun of Owu, spoke in his native tongue, Yoruba. He asked sons and daughters of Owuland to be coming home to develop the land.

One of the guests at the event and former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Alhaji Taofeek Arapaja, said he believes in performance by public office holders. He said if a public officer delivered in office, his people would always support him, apparently referring to Governor Amosun who is widely believed to have performed creditably well in office.

But how many public officers have really performed in office? Big question!
