It has emerged that Senator Akin Odunsi is the Ogun State gubernatorial candidate of Chief Segun Osoba’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) for the forthcoming election.
Odunsi is one of the three Ogun Senators loyal to Osoba but known to be having a running battle with the state Governor Ibikunle Amosun.
Amosun had vowed that none of the three Senators would return to the National Assembly in Abuja on the All Progressives Party’s (APC) platform.
A source within the newly-formed SDP in the state who disclosed this denied a newspaper report (not WESTERN POST) that former House of Representatives Speaker Dimeji Bankole had been picked by the party as its candidate.
He said: “Contrary to the report in that newspaper, its clear to all of us in SDP that Senator Akin Odunsi is our flag bearer in the Social democratic Party (SDP), while the present deputy governor of the state, Chief Segun Adesegun, is his running mate.
The source said further the former Speaker is not a member of SDP and has no relationship with the party.
He also stated that Bankole had neither collected the party’s Expression of Intent form nor made his intention known to the party leaders and executives in the state.
WESTERN POST had reported at the weekend that the former Speaker was in talks with SDP in a bid to emerge as its governorship ticket after he lost out in the power game in Ogun PDP.
The governorship candidate of the Peoples Party of Nigeria in the 2011 election, Chief Gboyega Nasiru Isiaka, backed by PDP financier, Chief Buruji Kashamu, had picked the PDP governorship ticket.
The source, however, said it was the ex-Speaker’s father, Chief Alani Bankole, who entered into a discussion with Aremo Olusegun Osoba over the possibility of the younger Bankole flying the SDP as gubernatorial candidate in the election.
But the source said the leadership of SDP had no plan to change its governorship candidate and his deputy.
