ITTF Elects Nigeria’s Toriola as Chair of African Athletes Commission

Nigeria’s Men’s Singles gold medallist at the All-Africa Games on four consecutive occasions between 1995 and 2007, Segun Toriola, has been elected chair of the African Table Tennis Federation (ITTF’s) Athletes Commission.

This is contained in a statement on the website of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) on Tuesday.

According to the statement, the decision to form the Commission was taken at the African Table Tennis Federation (ATTF) Congress held in Cairo on Saturday, January 24.

The statement said the 40-year-old Nigerian, who was the Men’s Singles winner twice at the Africa Senior Championships, would bring his wealth of experience to the group.

“The Nigerian, a four-time Men’s Singles gold medallist at the All-Africa Games, now holds a record that may never be equalled.

“Now 40 and a two-time Men’s Singles winner at the Africa Senior Championships, Toriola, who for many years competed in Europe, brings a wealth of experience to the group,’’ the statement said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Toriola, who is the Zone three representative, would be joined in the commission by six other members, representing other zones.

Each of the seven zones within the African Table Tennis Federation was represented, in addition, Egypt’s El-Sayed Lashin was included as an ex-officio member, being the continental representative on the ITTF Athletes’ Commission.

The other members include Mohamed Sofiene Boudjadja (Algeria), representative for Zone One, Mohamed Gueye (Senegal), representative for Zone Two and Sarah Hanffou (Cameroon) representative for Zone Four.

The other members are Osama Mohamed (Sudan), representative for Zone Five, Danisha Patel (South Africa), representative for Zone Six and Widaad Gukhool (Mauritius), representing Zone Seven.
