SECURITY personnel attached to Benin Prisons on Tuesday foiled  an attempted jail-break by inmates at the Benin Medium Security Prisons along Sapele Road in the Edo State capital.
WESTERN POST confirmed that the incident occurred late Tuesday evening while the inmates were outside their cells for normal check by the prisons officials.
Two of the inmates awaiting trial at the prisons had attempted to jump off the high barbed wire perimeter fence surrounding the complex before luck ran out of them.
It was learnt that an eagle-eyed armed mobile police officer who saw the inmates about to jump off the fence quickly shot into the air to prevent them from succeeding before warders went up the fence and brought the fleeing inmates down.
When contacted, an officer, who did not want his name in print, wondered why the armed guards in the prisons did not get wind of the plan of the inmates.
The state’s Comptroller of Prisons Service, Mr. Effion Etowa, said the prison warder attached to the inmates had promptly alerted the armed squad before the inmates could make good their escape.
He said one of the inmates involved had earlier last year been diagnosed of mental ailment and was coming from the clinic when he attempted to jump over the about 40 feet prison wall with another inmate.
Effion, however, stated that prison congestion could have bled to the attempt to break jail too.
