On May 14, 2015, members from Julius Berger’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) team visited the Bwari Government Day Secondary School in Abuja as part of the company’s Literacy Campaign, a CSR initiative designed to help promote the advancement of literacy within the Nigerian secondary school system. The CSR team organized and hosted a one day poetry workshop led by renowned Nigerian poet, Dike Chukwumerije, author of eight books and the winner of several Performance Poetry Competitions in Nigeria. SSS 1-3 students read the work of Nigerian poets, and learned to write their own poems using poetic literary devices. The workshop, in honour of World Poetry Day, was a creative and interactive way to teach the students new literacy skills, public speaking and self-confidence. The CSR team also made a donation of 600 books of mixed genre to the school’s library.
A part of Julius Berger’s CSR goals is to create educational progress through the establishment of sustainable programs and donations. Julius Berger Literacy Campaigns were launched in 2012 with the initiation of Julius Berger Book Clubs and the distribution of over 5,000 copies of the book, “The Great Fall” by Nigerian author Chinyere Obi-Obasi, to schools across Abuja, Lagos and Uyo.
The United Nations statistics list a youth literacy rate in Nigeria of 75.6% males and 58% females. The recent poetry workshop is just one component of the company’s CSR educational initiatives.
