Former Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Chukwudifu Oputa is dead. He was aged 96 years.
Justice Oputa was said to have suffered a stroke in February and had been hospitalised in Oguta, his hometown in Imo State ever since.
The family of Justice Oputa, in a statement signed by his son, Charles Oputa, popularly known as ‘Charley Boy’, announced the passing to glory of the eminent jurist and retired justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, at the age of 96 years.
“He passed on peacefully on Sunday afternoon, May 4, 2014, after recovering from a brief illness. Funeral arrangement will soon be announced by the family,” said the statement.
The late retired justice was born September 22, 1924, into the family of Chief Oputa Uzukwu and Mrs. Nwametu Oputa.
Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, was appointed to investigate abuses during 15 years of military rule, which ended when President Obasanjo took office as elected president on May 29, 1999.
Justice Oputa was the first Chief Judge of Imo State.
