Kogi Assembly Gets New Speaker

Kogi State House of Assembly has elected Honourable Matthew Kolawole as the new Speaker of the 6th legislative House, following the resignation of the Immediate past speaker Right Honourable Umar Ahmed Immam.

At the plenary session, 19 out of the 25 members were present when the resignation letter of former speaker was read and adopted.

Other principal officers elected are the Majority leader of the House, Honourable Abdullahi Hassa Bello who was formely Chief Whip, Honourable Omofaye Victor Adewale as new Chief Whip.

In his letter addressed to the Clerk of the House ,commended all his colleagues for standing by him to the last minutes,appreciated the confixence repose in him an all the support.

The part of the letter read thus,”what transpired last Tuesday during plenary sitting, thugs desdecorating the sanctity of this hallowed chamber was undemocratic,  condemnations act.of hooliganism and a criminal acts.I still hope that the perpetrators will be brought toy book”.

Within the same period, I have revamped the integrity of this noble institution and redirected it on the part of honour and in line with the democratic principle of Separation of Powers,” He said.

However those who spoke eulogised the quality leadership the former speaker exhibited during the brief stay.

Sequel to  the resignation of Imam, Ahmed Mohammed (APC-Ankpa I) nominated Kolawole for the position of speaker saying the office could not exist in a vacuum and was seconded by Abdulkareem  Kekere of Okehi state constituency.

In same vein, Kekere also nominated the new Majority Leader, Hassan for the position and was seconded by Mohammed Lawi Ahmed (APC-Okene I) who equally nominated Omofaiye for the position of Chief Whip and was seconded by Oluwatoyin Lawal (PDP-Yagba West).

In his Acceptance Speech, the new Speaker described his ascension as a unique privilege and the day, as a ”Watershed in the political annals of Kogi state as it marks the beginning of another path to further consolidate on the progress so far made by this August House.

Kolawole commended the ”unstinted commitment and service ” of Imam as he pledged his ”strong determination and resolve to rally this noble house for a common cause aimed at raising the bar of socio-political and economic development of our state.
