The embattled Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Senator Dino Melaye has described the allegation by the Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Ali Janga as blatant lies and mere cover up.
Just as he alleged that the Policemen wanted to kill him while he was on tour of commissioning projects across his constituency last week Thursday.
Senator Melaye who was reacting to the police allegation said that the police who were on stop and search operations in Mopa were shot at severally by the security details on entourage of the Senator.
The Chairman House Committee on Federal Capital Territory however in a press statement issued by his media assistant, Mr Gideon Ayodele explained that on that faithful day while returning from Isanlu, some armed Policemen, Special Anti-Robbery Squad allegedly stop his car next to the vehicle of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC) leading his convoy.
His words, “The Police stopped the vehicle of the Civil defence Corps, arrested them and suddenly opened fire on my vehicle including my back up vehicle.
“We all have to run for our dear lives as they continue to shoot sporadically at my Jeep and apart from the officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC) there was no other security men in my convoy.
According to him, “All these were happening in spite of my earlier letter to the Kogi State Police Command informing them of my plans to tour my constituency and commission my projects across the seven local government councils. While my lawyer also wrote them and they acknowledged the letters.
“The Kogi State Police Commissioner, CP Ali Janga was economical with the truth, no body from my convoy exchanged gun battle with the police.
“Police alleged that it was the last vehicle in my convoy that contained security men that shot the police.
“This is a big lie. If it is so why was it that nobody was arrested.
“The vehicle they alleged was never shot and why was it that it was my car that was next to civil defence vehicle that was attacked,” he said.
It would be Recall that Kogi State Police Command has invited Sen. Dino Melaye in connection with the shooting of one of its personnel at Iyah gbede, Ijumu Local Government on July 19.
The State Commissioner of Police, Mr Ali Janga told newsmen in Lokoja yesterday that the attention of the Senator, representing the Kogi West Senatorial District is needed to assist the police to unravel the circumstances surrounding the shooting incident.
It will be recalled that it was at the same Iyah Gbede that the senator narrowly being killed when his convoy came under heavy gun bombardment from people alleged to be in SARS uniform.
Janga alleged that the wounded police sergeant was a member of SARS team on stop and search at a spot at Iyah Gbede when shooting were fired from a white Toyota Hilux van in the convoy of Melaye.
“Expectedly, the policemen in self defence responded by firing back to repel the attack. Vehicles in the convoy nonetheless , drove away from the scene,” the Commissioner of police explained.
The Commissioner admitted that the police was aware that Melaye was in the state to inaugurate his constituency projects but said that the command did not assign any policeman to him.
He directed Melaye to report himself to the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of criminal intelligence and investigation, saying that no policeman was killed as erroneously reported by a section of the media.
