Without realising it, Governor Adams Oshiomhole is gradually becoming a whistleblower.
For anyone reading this who may not know, a whistleblower is a person who reports any activity that is deemed dishonest or illegal, but had been kept secret. And going by the Edo State Governor’s revelations in recent times, ‘Oshio’ as he is fondly called aptly fits this definition.
The comrade governor’s whistle-blowing career began when he alleged that money in the Excess Crude Account was spent without approval and was allegedly used to fund the re-election bid of former president Goodluck Jonathan.
That allegation pitched the former labour leader against former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala. But before the dust raised by that allegation could settle, Mr. Oshiomhole blew another whistle still bordering on corruption.
Governor Oshiomhole’s first whistle blew it open that $1bn was allegedly misappropriated under Dr. Iweala, now it’s another whooping $6bn which he said US officials claimed were stolen by an unnamed ex-minister.
And like it is said, birds of a feather flock together, another whistleblower in the person of former Central Bank of Nigeria governor, now Emir of Kano, His Royal Highness Sanusi Lamido Sanusi is still shuddering over the amount of money involved though it is much less than the $20bn the former CBN boss’s whistle blew open.
But talking about whistle-blowing, these two masters of the game are highly placed and enjoy some level of protection. However, it might not be safe for a less privileged member of the public who has information to blow the whistle. And that was why Professor Osisioma Nwolise, Head of Department of Political Science, University of Ibadan has advocated for the protection of whistleblowers, I agree with him.
If President Muhammadu Buhari wants to succeed in his anti-corruption crusade, he must encourage whistleblowers and provide protection for them.
While we wait for that lets give kudos to Governor Adams “Whistleblower Oshiomhole, Emir Sanusi Lamido and other whistleblowers like Senator Kabiru Marafa, who blew open the alleged alteration of Senate Standing Order and other courageous Nigerians.
