The Kwara State House of Assembly, has named the complex housing offices of members in the Assembly complex, after its Pioneer Speaker, Alhaji Shehu Usman, who was also the late Ciroma of Lafiagi.
Alhaji Shehu Usman, who served as Pioneer Speaker between 1979 – 1983, died on Monday 26 November 2018, at the age of 77.
The decision to named the members’ office complex in his honour, followed pledge made by the Speaker, Dr. Ali Ahmad ,during the valedictory session held in honour of the late Speaker on December 6, 2018.
Speaking on the Motion moved by the House Leader, Hon Hassan Oyeleke, after members unanimously resolved to name the building in honour of the late Ciroma, the Speaker said the decision to immortalize him was not only being a Speaker, but rather for being a charismatic and detribalised leader who led a rancour- free life and provided guidance to upcoming legislators.
Dr Ahmad who described him as a charismatic Leader that led a rancour- free life and provided guidance to upcoming leaders, called on the state government to also immortalize him.
He then directed the Clerk of the House, Hajia Halimat Jummai Kperogi, to give effect to the change immediately.
In their contributions, members represaenting Edu, Kaiama/Kemanji/Wajibe, Ilorin North West and Oke Ogun Contituencies, Hons Aliyu Ishiaku Adams, Ahmed Ibn Mohammed, Abdul – Rafiu Abdul – Rahman and Barrister Kamal Fagbemi, described him as a detribalized, committed and honest leader who devoted his endowments towards laying a solid foundation for the legislature in the state.
It would be recalled that the valedictory session for the late Pioneer Speaker was attended by 3 former Speakers, Rt. Hons Ezekiel Benjamin Yisa, Isa Bio Ibrahim, Babatunde Mohammed and many former legislators including the Second Republic House Leader, Chief Wole Oke.
