Kwara LG Chairmen Suspension: Vice, Councillors Go Spiritual Ahead Court Hearing

By Mosunmola Ayobami, Kwara

As a form of spiritual preparation for court hearing slated for 17th January 2020, all Vice-Chairmen and Councillors in the 16 local government areas of Kwara state whose Chairmen were suspended from office are urged to fast on 2nd January 2020.

The Chairman, Vice-Chairmen and Councillors Forum Hon Yusuf  Mohammed made the appeal on Monday at a joint press conference held by the 16 Local Government Councils’ Vice-Chairmen and Councillors at Nigeria Union of Journalists(NUJ) Press Center Ilorin.

It would be recalled that the Kwara state governor, Mall Abdulrahaman  Abdulrazaq announced the suspension of all sixteen Local Government Councils Chairmen for six months for alleged misappropriation of public funds since June 18th which was extended for another six months recently under proper investigations ground.

“In the interim, all the Vice-Chairmen and Councillors in all the 16 Local Government Areas are requested to fast on Thursday 2nd January 2020 as form of preparation for battle ahead, thereafter all Vice Chairmen, Councillors and Sympathizers are enjoined to assemble at the High Court premises in Ilorin on 17th January 2020 for the hearing of the case,” he said.

Mohammed said the suspension slammed the Local Government Councils, particularly the Legislative arm which described not just unlawful but arbitrary exercise of Executive power, adding that they reject the suspension but resolved to remain at home in order to give peace a chance in the state.

He added that though the case is in court, and they believed the Judiciary which is the last hope of common man would wipe their tears.

The Chairman of the Forum also disclosed that the governor has ordered the stoppage of the half salary being paid the Vice Chairmen and Councillors since the beginning of the investigation.

“Ladies and gentlemen, you have been taken through the travail of the Kwara State Local Government Vice-Chairmen and Councillors of the 2017-2020 set, ordinarily the absence of the Chairmen who have been accused of Wrong-doing, the Vice-Chairmen should under the law take charge, but the governor did not allow this,he placed the Vice Chairmen under suspension for no reason, the Councilors too who are not involved in the financial transactions in the Councils are also put on suspension, now all their entitlement has been totally stopped, in the history of Local government Councils in Kwara State no elected officers have been humiliated like this present 2017-2020 set, “he explained.

The Forum, however, pleaded with the good people of Kwara State, Traditional Rulers, Religious Leaders and Journalists in the state to persuade governor Abdulrazaq not to use his executive power to deny Kwara State good democracy and legitimate rights.

What comes to my mind after the just concluded Kwaryorg maiden conference that as in attendance ‘the who is who’ in the political scene of our beloved state, entrepreneurs and business guru’s in different fields of life cutting across health, education,IT etc is, where do we go from here???

What needed changes are our leaders ready to bring to Kwara South??!

Are Kwara Southerners ready for this changes in deeds and actions?

Over the years the youth have been a faculty of complains about bad governance, bad representation in governance, wide gap between the youth and the government, unemployment and a great percentage of nepotism, favouritism and tribalism when there is few slots for employment etc

No doubt to some extent the government can be blamed for the youths drug abuse, some other bad vices
a result of pressure from issues of life due largely to unemployment, not that the home front, the community, our schools and the religious organizations doesn’t share in the blames.

The maiden edition of Kwayorg as taken a bold step to bridge the gap between the youth and the ‘who is capable’ to bring changes to our beloved Kwara South.

Am more interested in the changes that follows the conference.

And I hope that the government of Kwara State could see via the politicians, business men , professionals etc from Kwara South and proffer solutions to alighted needed development and conquer the challenges that could be an hinderance to achieving a truely progressive Kwara South by giving grants, loans or incentives to needed hands and also contribute directly by investing in Kwara South.

Kwayorg as set a pace not just in Kwara South or Kwara State but beyond as i wouldn’t be surprised if other organizations are springing up having been inspired by Kwayorg.

The youth across the Local Governments in Kwara South should embrace this development and take the success of Kwayorg maiden edition as a Christmas gift.

The president of the organization Barrister Titilope Akogun and his team,no doubt have put a great deal of work into seeing to the success of the conference -big congratulations!!!

The job begins from here and i call on all Kwara Southerners to put Kwayorg on their toes with your comments, criticism and contributions to a great Kwara South.

Dear Kwayorg, now is time to brace up and do even more as you have set a standard that you will need to ‘up on’ on every of your activities.

Note that it is in your relentless efforts that this expected changes in Kwara South can be put to existence.

The maiden edition have provided a room for interaction between the governed, government, businesses moguls, experts, entrepreneurs and professionals in different fields, now is time for you to wake up,brace up and don’t relent.

As we prepare to celebrate christmas, may more Kwara Southerners be celebrated world wide reflective of positive changes and growth infused in Kwara South.
