At least Thirteen persons were recently arraigned at a magistrate court in Ilorin over charges of setting a suspected kidnappers ablaze in Ilorin.
According to the police, efforts to rescue the victim Fatai Ayinde Kayode a residence of Elekuro Compound, behind Emirs Palace, Ilorin was unsuccessful as the accused persons allegedly launched attack on the team of policemen during the operation smashing the wind screen of the patrol vehicle leaving the left mirror broken.
According to the police, the team leader, Inspector Ismail Sanni and one corporal Aliu Suleman were injured and their Walkie Talkie was snatched. Their arraignment followed a four count charge of criminal conspiracy attempt to commit culpable homicide, obstructing public servant in the discharge of duty under written law and mischief contrary to section 97, 299, 149 and 327 of the penal code law preferred against them.
The accused persons were Quadri Mahmud (20), Adekeye Adebayo (23), Rainbow Zungwan (35) , John Kennedy (24) , olalekan Elijah (22), ola Afolabi (43), Abdullateef Yakub (24 Opeyemi Badmus (22) and Usman olatunji (22). Other were Samson Agboola, (40), Suleiman Adebayo (48) and Oyerinde Samuel (22).
The accused pleaded not guilty to the crime; while Police Prosecutor Chris Koragee urged the court to refuse their bail but the Seven Defence Counsel , Mustapha Buhari who was representing the second accused spoke on their behalf prayed the court to discountenance the prayer of the prosecutor and grant them bail on the strength of Section 36 (5) among others. The court later granted the accused a bail bond of N50,000 each with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till 5th of may 2014.
