The Kwara state commissioner of police Kayode Egbetokun has handed over eight hundred and fifty two bags of rice loaded in fifteen different cars and twenty four suspects to the Nigeria Customers Service for proper prosecution.
The CP made this disclosure while briefing newsman at the police headquarters in Ilorin on Friday.
“On the 7th July 2019 personnel of Nigeria Navy school of health Sciences, Irra,Offa Kwara state, while on security check at own base port check point Offa intercepted and arrested fifteen vehicles each loaded with fifty five bags of 50kg rice totaling eight hundred and twenty five bags of suspected smuggled rice with fifteen suspects and were handed over to the Command through the DPO Offa Divisional Police Headquarters for investigation”he said.
Egbetokun said the Command has in the past five days investigate and determine if the suspects were involved in other types of crime apart from smuggling.
He added that the the Command has also determined if the goods were smuggled or stolen or smuggled and stolen,locate other offenders and provide evidence for guilt of the criminal suspects.
The CP noted that all suspects confessed to the commission of the crime of smuggling of banned rice,adding that there was no evidence to link the suspects to other crime apart from smuggling.
The Police Boss said the Command had handed over the twenty four suspects and eight hundred and twenty five bags of rice to the Nigeria Custom Service, Ilorin for further investigation and prosecution.
The CP similarly said operation “puff-Adder” has led to arrest of suspected cultists,Kidnappers and other criminal element.
Receiving the intercepted commodity, Chief Superintendent of Custom who also doubled as officer In charge of warehouse Adamu Yahyha commended the state police command for their efforts and synergy which has brought about the result.
