The Lagos State House of Assembly has passed the 2018 Land Use Charge amendment bill into law, renaming the passed law as ‘Property Land Use Charge Law’.
The Lawmakers gave the approval after a Bill for A Law To Amend Land Use Charge 2019 was read for the third time.
The law however, incorporates all laws on land use matters in the state.
The Speaker, Rt (Hon) Mudashiru Obasa, then asked the Clerk of the House, Mr. Azeez Sanni to send a clean copy of the law to the Governor of the state, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for assent.
It will be recalled that the Land Use Charge Law was initially amended in 2018 and its implementation by the past immediate executive governor of the state, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode generated alot of controversies which nearly consumed the administration. It will be right to point that the implementation of the amended law in 2018 also lead to series of protests from the Nigeria Bar Association ( NBA, Ikeja Branch) and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs).
It was the public outcry over the implementation that necessitated the constitution of an ad-hoc committee by the House of Assembly in 2019 which was headed by Hon. Rotimi Olowo, to look at the grey areas and make necessary amendments.
