Lagos Begins To Enforce Insurance For Buildings

Lagos State Safety Commission says it will begin full enforcement of the state’s Insurance Act 2003, which mandates all buildings in the state to have an insurance cover.

The Director General, Lagos State Safety Commission, Hakeem Dickson, said the commission had been restructured to ensure strict compliance with the law.

According to him, by insuring all buildings in the state, victims will have easy access to compensation in the event of any disaster as opposed to awaiting government’s aid.

Dickson said this at a recent press conference to announce the 2017 edition of the commission’s safety award, tagged, ‘Nigeria Safety Award for Excellence Hall of Fame 2017.’

He added that the commission had commenced talks with a consortium of insurance companies through the National Insurance Commission, which would spearhead the insurance scheme.

“It is our hope that these awards to recognise those who have excelled in safety measures will encourage others to aim for the best because merit and hard work will always be recognised,” Dickson said.
