Lagos East Bye- Election: We Are Yet to Pick Candidate- APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Lagos state chapter, has debunked reports that it has picked a candidate for the Lagos East Senatorial District Bye- Election, saying that the party is yet to commence the selection process.

The party, in a statement issued on Saturday night by its State Publicity Secretary, Mr Seye Oladejo, explained that it is still mourning the demise of Sen. Bayo Osinowo whose death sent a shock wave to the party, disclosing that Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is yet to officially notify the party of the scheduled bye-election.

” Our attention has been drawn to the various speculations as regards the emergence of a candidate for the yet to be scheduled Lagos East Senatorial by-election.
Lagos State APC will like to state emphatically that the process of selecting a candidate is yet to commence for a number of reasons.

” First, our party is still mourning the demise of Senator Sikiru Adebayo Osinowo whose sudden departure sent shock waves through the fabrics of the party.
The INEC is yet to officially notify the party of the scheduled
by-election”, said Lagos APC.

” The constitution of our party is explicit about the process for the emergence of candidates for elections and we are irrevocably committed to abide by this. The nomination is either by consensus or a primary among the aspirants. The party acknowledges the interest the by-election may generate as the ruling party, but we want to urge all and sundry to play by the rules.

” We wish to reiterate our commitment to provide at the appointed time , a level playing field for all the aspirants to engender internal democracy.

” We want to assure the media, party men and women and other interests that we will communicate the plan and process and program of the party towards the by-election at the appropriate time”, said Lagos APC.

Recalled that the senator who represented Lagos East Senatorial District, Sen. Adedayo Osinowo died at the age of 65 in June this year in Lagos over COVID-19 related ailment.

Osinowo was a leader within the APC in Lagos particularly in Lagos East Senatorial District.

He was formerly in the Lagos State House of Assembly where he represented Kosofe Constituency 1 from 2003 to 2019. In the Senate, Osinowo was Chairman, Committee on Commerce, Investment and Industry.

It is right to point that immediately after his burial, many political gladiators from the senatorial district have started skimming to occupy the vacant seat. Some of the gladiators are; a member of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), Alhaji Lanre Rasaq, Lagos East APC Vice Chairman, Asipa Kaoli Olusanya, Hon. Sunmi Odesanya, former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Adeyemi Ikuforiji, immediate past governor Akinwunmi Ambode, Former Commissioners like Rotimi Ogunleye, Tola Kasali, Tokunbo Abiru, former Clerk of the State’s House of Assembly, Mr Ganiyu Abiru and Senator Gbenga Ashafa.

Also, in the opposition party, People’s Democratic Party (PDP), almost three aspirants had shown interest to replace the late Osinowo.
