A Lagos Lawyer and Founder of Malcolm Foundation, Bar. Malcolm Omirhobo, has called on President Muhammad Buhari to find a lasting solution to the incessant killings of Nigerians by the Boko Haram and bandits in the North.
He lambasted the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. General Tukur Buratai, for poor execution of the war against insurgency.
The lawyer, who staged a one-man protest from Victoria Island to the Lagos State House of Assembly Complex in Alausa, Ikeja, said: “I stage this protest to campaign against the bloodletting, butchering, killings, and massacre going on in Nigeria. All of us and the world have failed to give it the real name and the real name is ‘Genocide’.
“I am using this protest to call on the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, the Chief of Staff of Army, Navy and Air force, the members of the National Assembly, DSS, Inspector-General of Police, Lagos State government and Lagos Lawmakers, United Nations, African Union, and Ecowas to please take the genocide going on in Nigeria very seriously.”
Omirhobo said he decided to stage the protest in Lagos because of its strategic position in the country, stressing that the ‘genocide’ could spread across the country if not stopped quickly.
The Human Rights Activist stated that there was a need to stop the ‘genocide’ quickly so as to avert the spread to other parts of the country, disclosing that over 87,000 Nigerians had lost their lives to either bandits, Boko Haram or the Fulani Herdsmen.
Omirhobo added, “I am calling on the government to please punish anybody that is acting against humanity because it is becoming obvious that the government is handling the perpetrators of the killings with kids glove. There is complicity in this matter as far as I am concerned ”
He accused the government of releasing the perpetrators even after being arrested, saying none had been prosecuted since the killings started.
The Human Rights Activist added ” Even governor of Kaduna state agreed to the fact that these terrorists are from neighboring Africa countries and nobody has called him out. In 2016, the president himself said the perpetrators are people from outside the country. Nothing has been done about it. Every day it is either somebody who is killed in Abia or in Adamawa.
“The killing is on a daily basis, life means nothing to them. I can tell you that the United Nations has failed woefully because what is happening in Nigeria today is worst than what is happening in Syria and Iraq, so, I am calling on the government to come clean and also to mop up guns and lite weapons from the system.”
He said that the government was doing nothing about mopping up guns and light weapons, saying that it only went to defenseless citizens to mop up their hunting guns and cooking utensils.
Omirhobo stressed ” The government must mop up unlicensed guns and dangerous weapons. Those who have should be allowed to renew theirs. I called on all Nigerians to apply for guns because they have the right to defend themselves. It is enshrined in the constitution . The government has said there is no enough soldiers to go to Kaduna state. That is to say Nigeria cannot fight external aggressors presently because there is no enough military personnel.
” As far as I am concerned, the military has not done enough . Somebody said he is a terrorist which is a treasonable offence and such person come to say again that he has repented and you forgive him. I am calling out the Chief of Army Staff that he is not performing at all. The Nigeria army is not professional at all . The COAS should stop attending rallies, and visiting traditional rulers. The army should stop involving themselves in politics.
“Now, the Edo election is near, they will go there. In the last general elections, they were in places. The army has not been able to prioritize their task at all. They are only gallivanting and involving themselves in what they suppose not to. What is the army doing in the South-South by way of ‘Operation Crocodile Smile or in Southeast now? The army has destroyed the security fabric of this country.
“The police can arrest the Boko Harams if the government will allow. The military has done nothing other than waste our money. I am not a military man but I can do better than the COAS”, said Omirhobo.
He called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to speed up the implementation of the Amotekun security initiative, saying that the initiative had been politicized.
