Money is not everything. This common saying has become the lot of a gubernatorial aspirant under the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) stable, Engr Seyi Makinde, as his largesse to party executives and delegates in the state in his bid to pick the ticket of the party for the 2015 governorship poll in the state may have fallen flat.
WESTERN POST learnt that following the development, the youthful politician, who has left no one in doubt as to his readiness to expend any amount of money towards realizing his gubernatorial ambition, is presently having a rethink on his spending spree.
Beginning from January this year, Makinde had been paying varied amounts of money to all the party executive members who are delegates to the state congress of the party where the gubernatorial candidate would be picked when the time comes.
Although the exact amount being paid to PDP state chairman, Hon. Yinka Taiwo, could not be confirmed as at press time at the weekend, each member of the state working committee of the party is said to be collecting N50,000 per month from the aspirant.
Makinde who is said to be in Oil and Gas business is also said to be sending to each of the 33 local governments areas of the state a sum of N25,000 each to be shared by the party’s local government working committee.
The money, according to sources, is shared as follows;
Chairman, N10,000; Secretary, Women Leader and Youth Leader N5,000 each.
However, the arrangement went sour in March when an invitation sent to the party executives both at the state and local government levels for an event by the aspirant was not heeded.
Makinde, who believes the monetary gift had gotten the party executives and delegates at the primaries, which date is yet to be fixed, behind his aspiration, had invited all the paid delegates to join him at the formal inauguration of his campaign structure held at the Chief Lekan Are well-maintained Kakanfo Hotel on the ……..
But alas, none of the party executives showed up at the event.
At the occasion slated to commence at 10 am, Makinde waited till 12 noon with repeated calls and appeals to get at least some of the delegates to be present before he grudgingly called for the take off of the event at about 1pm without the delegates.
Angered by this development, the Oyo PDP guber aspirant was said to have stopped payment of the stipends to all the executives.
During his visit to the party secretariat in January, Makinde had donated a brown new bus along with a lump sum to the state executives.
He is said to be the biggest spender among all the PDP aspirants seeking to occupy Agodi Government House in 2015.
The Director of Makinde’s campaign organisation, Mr Kehinde Ayoola, did not pick his phone when our correspondent called him on Friday evening to respond to the development. A text message sent to his phone was yet to be replied at press time.
