One Dead, 15 Sustain Burns as LASEMA Moves in to Forestall Further Tragedy in Obalende Fire

One dead and 15 persons sustained minor burns during the fire that ravaged Obalende area of Lagos on Friday.

The Director-General of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, however, said LASEMA was able to avert another full devastation of the area by fire.

The fire, which started from a tanker belonging to the NNPC, was said to have tipped over before bursting into flames in front of the Oando filling station.

According to Dr Oke-Osanyintolu in a press statement last night: “The agency received a distress call on the above incident concerning a 45000 liter capacity tanker loaded with PMS which was ablaze having fallen on its side directly in front of the petrol station.

“Efforts to combat the flames by the agency’s officials and men of the Lagos State Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service have been successful and the fire has been extinguished and the station and surrounding buildings protected.

“Unfortunately the inferno has resulted in one fatality, fifteen  minor casualties and one major casualty who happens to be a Lagos State Firefighter. He has been subsequently transferred to the Lagos State General Hospital for treatment while minor casualties received on the scene medical attention.”

Dr Oke-Osanyintolu appealed for calm and urged members of the public to keep away and allow the emergency responders to conclude recovery after which LASEMA will be able to clear the road for vehicular traffic.
