The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has described the conduct of local government traffic officials in the state as uncivil.
LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olawale Musa, stated that the officials were notorious for harassing motorists, noting that their activities remained banned on roads.
Musa spoke on Wednesday during a meeting with motorists and commuters who were at the agency’s office in Oshodi to report the alleged excesses of the council traffic officials.
He said, “The local government traffic officials are in the habit of displaying lack of professionalism in their conduct; they are improperly tutored in the act of managing traffic; they are ill-structured and lack respect for motorists and members of the public.
“We have been consistent in our position that no other government officials at the state and local government levels are assigned statutory responsibility of controlling and managing traffic in the state outside the traffic officials of LASTMA.”
The LASTMA boss urged the motorists not to yield to the council traffic officials’ intimidation or demand for money when accosted.
A driver, Olawale Yunusa, who spoke on behalf of the protesters, said if the officials were not cautioned, they were capable of disrupting free flow of traffic and the economy of the state.
