Commander of the 81 Division Military Intelligence Unit, Brig. General Ahmed Taiwo, on Saturday disclosed that a portion of the army went with live ammunition to the lekki toll gate on the 20th of October 2020, adding that other colleagues with blank bullets shot into the air.
Taiwo said those with live ammunitions were to protect the soldiers who were deployed to restore order.
The army general said that he was not at lekki toll gate on the day of the incident but that he relied on the information given to him by his operatives at the incident to make claims.
He made these revelations when he was cross-examined by the Counsels to EndSARS protesters, Mr Olumide Adeyinka Fusika SAN and the Former Chairman, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA, Ikeja Branch), Mr Adeshina Ogunlana, at the ongoing Lagos State Judicial Panel On Restitution For Victims Of SARS Related Abuses and Lekki Shootings.
Taiwo acknowledged that the protesters were not abridged of the curfew since it was to start by 9pm, adding that the army was not on a mission to the toll gate but on a joint operation to Epe.
He said the shooting order was given by Lt Col. Bello who led the soldiers before General Omata came thereafter to stop the shooting.
Taiwo added that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was misinformed to have said lekki protesters were injured, saying that no protester was injured to the best of his knowledge.
He said the videos he presented as evidence before the panel were sourced openly under his supervision, adding that he did not have a twitter handle to know if the army headquarters had denied the presence of soldiers at lekki toll gate.
He added that the army headquarters denied because it did not have full facts at hand at that particular period.
Taiwo added that one officer was injured on his lip through the stone melted on the soldiers, saying ” if we are attacked, the only option is to shoot “.
