Friday Aderemi, is a name that rings a bell and instantly brings to memory the events that followed the impeachment of Ayo Fayose and Mrs.AbiodunOlujimi as Ekiti State governor and deputy governor by Peoples Democratic Party dominated House of Assembly on October 16, 2006. Aderemi as the Speaker of the state House of Assembly then assumed office as acting governor.
But he will, however, go down in history as the governor with the shortest rein in the 16 years of existence of Ekiti State thus far. He was in the saddle for just two days (October 16 -18, 2006). The then President OlusegunObasanjo slammed a state of emergency on the state on October 18, thus ending Aderemi’s reign. Obasanjo appointed Brig-General AdetunjiOlurin (rtd) as the Sole administrator to take charge of the state.
At that critical juncture in the state, Aderemi’s role in rescuing Ekiti from an impeding crisis following the ouster of Fayose singled him out as a patriotic man who did not want the ship of the state to crumbled, though some also blamed the House of Assembly, accusing the members of being driven by inordinate ambition.
Aderemi, 74, died on Tuesday, January 7, 2014, after an illness he had battled with since October last year. Aderemi had the privilege of been elected into the House of Assembly twice, first in the old Ondo State in 1983 and in Ekiti State in 2003. He was elected as a member old Ondo State House of Assembly in 1982 and member Ekiti State House of Assembly in 2003. He was elected Speaker Ekiti State House of Assembly on July 19 2004. Electing Aderemi again into the state legislature after 20 years spoke volumes about the trust reposed in him as a dependable servant of the people.
Aderemi was born on March 29,1940 in Ayetoro. He attended St Stephen Anglican School Ayetoro, St Andrew Anglican Primary School, Usi, Teachers’ Training Colleges in Ikere, Ifon and Usi. Had OND in Elect/Elect at The Polytechnic Ibadan, then Technical College, Ibadan and HND Elect/Elect at Yaba Tech. He worked as a teacher for many years and at various times as an engineer at the Federal Research Centre Oshodi, Thermocool Engineering Limited and Adebowale Electrical Company among others. Aderemi formed a company called Pan-state Electrical with two of his friends.
Ekiti State Governor KayodeFayemi described him as an uncommon statesman who served the people with humility, diligence, enthusiasm, selflessness and commitment to the cause of the commonman. Fayemi said Aderemi stood in defence of Ekiti people and saved the state from anarchy in October 2006 when former governor Fayose and his deputy were impeached.
