Oyo state governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde and the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Sunday Dare have expressed sadness over the devastating fire that gutted the ancient Akesan Market in Oyo town in the early hours of Sunday.
The governor, in a tweet on Sunday sympathized with the victims of the inferno and promised to investigate the circumstances around the unfortunate incident.
He said, “I received with shock, news of the fire outbreak at Oja Akesan in Oyo Town, in the early hours of this morning.
“Words cannot convey my sadness at this incident and I sympathise with the victims. I appeal for calm as we investigate the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident.”
Also, the minister in a tweet said “The news of the inferno that destroyed the popular Akesan Ancient market in Oyo just got to me. I am deeply saddened by this disaster so early in the year and extend my condolences to all those affected. I will visit shortly and work with the State government to bring relief”.
While sending condolences and sharing in their loss, the minister stated that the importance and purpose of Akesan Market was a major market with huge economic impact in Oyo state and Nigeria at large cannot be overemphasized. He noted that the fire “is indeed a great disaster “
The minister promised to visit the scene of the fire shortly and to work with the Oyo State government to bring relief to the victims.
Western Post recalled that the fire incidence which razed market has led to lost of properties worth millions of naira.
News reports also have it that security operatives gunned down 3 people during a protest by angry youth over the inability of the firefighters to quench the fire.
