An unidentified man with one hand fell from the top of a Kano-bound moving train in Ilorin, Kwara State on Saturday afternoon, dropping dead immediately.
According to an eye witness, a lady who said she saw the man, an Almajiri, as she boarded the train in question in Lagos, said the deceased had been going in and outside the train, apparently trying to dodge from train officials checking passengers’ tickets.
“I was surprised to see him dead here in Ilorin. I suspect that he went out from the train when the train stopped and the checkers came in Ilorin and when he saw the train moving again, he ran to join it from the station and he apparently fell off,” she said.
Speaking on the development, an official of the Nigerian Railway Corporation in Kwara State, Mr. Godwin Oghisonai said: “It was a Kano-bound passenger train coming from Lagos, which arrived Ilorin at 05: 55hrs. But due to logistic reasons, the train delayed it till 09: 45hrs. Shortly after the train departed, however, I received call from the level-crossing keeper, telling me that somebody fell from the roof of the train. I rushed there in company of the station’s Divisional Police Officer, DPO, to see what the situation was
“He is actually an Almajiri, a one-handed man, without ticket on. The unfortunate thing is that despite repeated announcements in Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba that no one should hang on the train, someone still took the risk to hang on the train and at the end of it he died. He had no ticket, the corporation cannot be held liable for his suicide act, ” he explained.
The deceased’s corpse has already been deposited at a mortuary in Ilorin.”
Another eye witness recalled that a similar accident happened last year when one passenger was knocked off a moving train from the roof by power line protective cables at Offa, Kwara State.
Sympathizers wailed and cried at the scene of the accident but no one was able to identify the victim since he was said to be en route the North.
