…Blames Alao-Akala for defection
By Bode Akinbode, Ibadan
Less than forty-eight hours to the general election, no fewer than ten thousand members of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) in Oyo State on Thursday, pitched their tent with the All Progressives Congress (APC).
While receiving the decampees at the party’s secretariat at Oke-Ado in Ibadan, the Vice Chairman of the party, Mr. Lekan Adeyemo stated that the decampees decided to join the winning party as a result of rapid success and progress recorded under APC government in the state.
He added they have seen for themselves the difference between the 16 years governance by the PDP and four years of APC at the federal level and the unprecedented development in the state.
Mr Adeyemo then called on all party members and supporters to remain peaceful and law abiding before, during and after the upcoming elections.
“We have received these latest decampees few days to the elections. We are happy about it because it is a plus for our party and candidates.
“However, everyone should avoid violence. We urge our people to go and vote and remain peaceful.”
Speaking with newsmen after the ceremony, Mr. Folaranmi Owolabi, the former chairman of ADP in the state who led the decampees, blamed their decision to dump the party on former governor of the state, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala over what he described as his (Alao-Akala’s) selfish mission to change the party structure to his own advantage.
According to him, Alao-Akala came purposely to destabilise the party that they brought well over two years ago.
“Immediately Otunba Akala came last year October, the whole party structure changed. He cleverly snatched the party from us.
“He said being a former governor of the state, we have him some privileges. Some of our members have obtained forms to contest election to the House of Assembly, House of Representatives and Senate.
“We told him when he came in and he said he would not tamper with the structure. Eventually he did.
“Out of the 32 House of Assembly members, we gave him 21 slots. The original members of ADP took 7 and we gave SDP just only 4.
“He went to Abuja and cleverly removed 8 names out of that 11 and released just only 3 for us. Out of the 14 House of Representatives, we gave him 10. He also went to Abuja again and cleverly removed 3, leaving just only 1 for us,” Owolabi disclosed.
He described the former governor as a self-centered person, who he said, should never be trusted for anything, adding that they unanimously leave the party for him.
