In a fashion similar to their onslaught in Elepete-Igbo Olomu, Agric, Ikorodu community, the notorious Ijaw cult boys on Saturday, April 29, 2017 struck again.
They went on a rampage and attacked Ojokoro Newtown, Owutu Agric community, causing loss of lives and destruction of properties, including houses and vehicles.
According to eyewitnesses who chose to remain anonymous for fear of reprisal, the Ijaw attackers stole into the community in the dead of the night brandishing sophisticated guns and cutlasses and shooting indiscriminately to cause panic. Their mission was made easier by the PHCN power outage which rendered the community into pitch darkness. Riding motor bikes under the thick darkness, the militant boys caught the residents unaware and seem to target night community watch teams on duties.
The reason for the attack remains unclear, but unconfirmed sources said the cult group was angry that one of the community watch teams reported an alleged plan attempt by the group to sabotage gas pipeline in the neighbourhood to the police. It was also gathered that some informants within the police apparently leaked the information to the group. The police however denied that any of their officers was complicit in the attack. Some of the community watch teams were feared killed in the attack, some residents were also murdered in this dastardly act, while others escaped with injuries. Many residents abandoned their homes and took refuge in nearby bushes.
The head of the ijaw militant’s boys was killed by the combined military squad, while some escaped, but the military squad is still carrying out their investigation to forestall future occurrence.
