Some persons were injured today at the rerun of Oyo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ward congresses held at the party’s Secretariat, Dandaru in Ibadan as political thugs stormed the area.
Though there was a heavy presence of security personnel, comprising a detachment of policemen in an Amoured Personnel Carrier, a truck load of mobile policemen and men from the Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS), yet a charged atmosphere prevailed at the venue of the congress.
The party secretariat was besieged by a high number of miscreants, thugs and mean-looking hoodlums, who were waiting outside the gate.
However, trouble started when the former Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Lateef Oloruntoki Akinsola popularly called Tokyo, who was at the party secretariat for sometime left.
Moments after the ex-union boss left, thugs, brandishing brand new cutlasses stormed the area, leading to chaos as motorists and pedestrians scampered to safety in adjoining University College Hospital (UCH), Kunle Ara Pharmacy and shops along the Mokola – UCH axis.
Some people were knocked down by the public transport buses conveying the hoodlums as they tried to escape from the party secretariat, following a tip-off of that rival political thugs were coming to attack.
It took the quick intervention of men of the Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS), to chase the cutlass – wielding thugs, who came in about five public transport taxis, loaded with cutlasses away.
The police also had to use tear gas to disperse the crowd at the secretariat and later made some arrests.
