Once again the Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Senator Dino Melaye escaped death by whiskers, when several unidentified gunmen stormed the venue of the peaceful protest organised by him to press home for the payment of civil servants outstanding salaries in
Melaye who had been having running battle with the State Government for quite some times now, took time to explained why we was not happy with happenings in the State, stressing that the government is owing backlog of salaries of workers and pensioners.
He explained he was not asking anything from the State Government expect for the payment of salaries, noting that the government was plotting for his recall which will not possible.
The lawmaker however issued a 30 days ultimatum to the Governor Yahaya Bello administration to pay the salaries, failure of which there will massive peace protest against the government.
Meanwhile as Senator Melaye was rounding up his address to his supporters, unknown gunmen stormed the the main gate of the Kogi state Polytechnic,the venue of the rally and started shooting sporadically as many supporters scampered for their lives.
WhiIe shooting lasted one of suspected thugs who were shooting indiscriminately fell to the superior power of gun, while others received various degree of injuries.
The State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello who visited the scene of the incident disclosed that it has been long that Senator Dino Melaye had planned to cause pandemonium in state.
Governor Bello stated that he had earlier informed the Presidency and Security agencies, stressing that since nobody heed Dino’s heinous plan, he decided to come and perpetrated evil to destabilize state.
He therefore called on Police and other security agencies to investigate this matter and bring the perpetrators to book.
However the Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic, Dr.Isah Mohammed has identified the deceased as Student of the institution.
Mohammed disclosed that he was in the office when he sporadic gun shots outside the main gate of the Polytechnic.
While speaking with Journalists at the scene of the incident, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Wilson Inalegwu stated that the organization organiser of the peaceful rally did not obtained police permit to do so.
Inalegwu added that he had order the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of crime to commence investigation immediately, noting that as at now The Police could not confirm the casualties as people are going round the hospitals.
It would be recalled that Senator Melaye escaped death when unknown assailants attacked his residence at Ayetoro during the Easter festivities.
