Memo To President Buhari, By Kola Amzat

President Mohammud Buhari,

President, Commander-in-Chief, Federal Republic of Nigeria,

Aso Villa,

FCT, Abuja.

Your Excellency,

Sir, I sincerely hope this memo gets to Your Excellency.

I affirm that, I manage to put this piece together with deepest of sorrow, pains in my heart and despair in my soul, on account of Your Excellency deliberate posture in continually watching APC crumbling, the party that took the valiant and spirited efforts of all heroes of democracy across the country to build, with their collective fortunes, political experience, as well as a total commitment of their souls.

Before 2019 general elections, APC was in firm control of Bauchi, Sokoto, Benue, Zamfara, Adamawa, Oyo & Edo states, and even to a reasonable extent, Sokoto state.

Tragically, and in unexplainable & inexcusable circumstances, we completely lost our long reign of power & authority in Bauchi and Adamawa to oppositions, consequent upon the unnecessary infighting occasioned by the party primaries, which generality of party faithful believed the president should have played a fatherly role by wielding his huge influence within the party to bring to a close, thus restoring orderliness & normalcy in the concerned states. This didn’t happen!

In the case of Zamfara State, the party, as if we’re tired of holding the reign of authority, carelessly & insensitively handed, in one fell swoop, sacred mandates entrusted onto all our elected candidates-governor, senators, rep members, as well as assembly members to PDP on the platter of gold and in a bizarre circumstance that would continue to be a ‘study’ in the political history of the nation, as well as global politics.

Benue state presented a more damaging and very frustrating spectacle. APC was in total control of the state, with the impregnable & unquestionable leadership model of the illustrious progressive Icon, former two-time governor of the state, as well as erstwhile minority leader of the senate, distinguished Senator George Akume, the incumbent special duties minister. Without any shreds of doubt, Akume was in charge of the state, with his adopted political son, Samuel Ortom holding sway as the governor. Even, the enormous financial resources of David Mark, former two-time senate president, with his awesome combination with influential and politically savvy Gabriel Suswan couldn’t sway the tide in favour of PDP in the state.

Suddenly, there was a serious challenge, in form of the incessant clash between Fulani herdsmen and Benue farmers, with the latter group always ended up as bigger casualties anytime this problem surfaced.

Samuel Ortom persistently was crying over his voice, and at a time, the governor assumed the status of resounding voice for the generality of farmers in the North Central geo-political zone.

At a stage, his people subjected him to intense pressure, drawing it to his hearing of the need for him to abandon APC, when it was apparent that, the president was not prepared to shift ground against hid kinsmen.

Eventually, Ortom buckled under the pressure of his people and decamped to PDP. He recontested under his new party, and even though, he marginally won, his unusual triumph was a major blow & dent on the APC ruling party, with her imperial federal power & authority.

Indeed, it was politically unacceptable and unreasonable that the president allowed Benue to be annexed by PDP. Such bizarre political loss would never happen under Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, and not even under Goodluck Jonathan.

Then came Saturday, September 19, gubernatorial election in Edo state, a development that has now reinforced the strong perception of all the APC party faithful across the land of President Buhari newfound philosophy of  ‘You are on your own’  anytime candidate of his party is contesting. This political ideal of the president is quite regrettable & frustrating, particularly when one recollects courageous & valiant efforts of all party faithful across the length & breadth of the country, to the extent that some of them were prepared to put their lion the line at ensuring that the president got re-elected for the second term, against all odds.

The party adherents didn’t stop at that; they also mobilized themselves spiritually & otherwise to ensure that the president triumphed in the ensuing & titanic legal battles, all the way from the Tribunal to the Supreme court.

How come the same president has suddenly embraced a strange political philosophy of always abandoning his flocks during their own hours of needs, with the president preferring to assume the pontification role of a Pope more than the original Pope in the Vatican city of Rome.

For the avoidance of doubt, the build to that election and PDP alleged eventual victory made it extremely saddened and unacceptable and unfair the overall posture of President Buhari to completely abandon Comrade Adams Oshiomole and other APC faithful in the state at their hours of needs.

The whole world knew how Oshiomole practically installed Obaseki as governor against all odds, bringing him from obscurity to political stardom. We’re also not oblivious of the same Obaseki extinguished Comrades political career by orchestrating his suspension from his Etsako ward, a political development that eventually truncated his reign as national chairman of the party.

The blunt refusal of the governor to inaugurate fourteen assembly members has not lost on us, a calculated move on the part of the governor to destabilize & destroy the democratic institution and annihilate everything democracy stands for.

We also vividly recollect how the same governor serially disobeyed the party top hierarchy, NASS leadership, Asiwaju Tinubu, Pa Bisi Akande, all who made spirited attempts top resolve the political impasse. How come the president has chosen to further strengthen the governor by allowing his re-election?

Even the American, the bastion & home of democracy have their internal problem, as there are still adopting homegrown democracy, despite centuries of their democratic experiment. We vividly recollect the celebrated case of Al-Gore, the vice president to Bill Clinton, who clearly won the presidential election, but had his victory upturned by the American Aristocrats, in favour of George Bush Jnr in what’s referred to as Florida electoral manipulation. And of course, the global community has not forgotten how President Donald Trump berthed in White House, against the popular wish of Americans in favour of Hillary Clinton, through the collaborative efforts of Russia & Serbia.

It is important to remind the president that, abandoning in the lurch to his fate of Comrade Adams Oshiomole who passionately led the flocks of APC throughout the nation, campaigning for the president reelection was most unfair, bizarre, frustrating and uninspiring.

While the curtains are eventually drawn on the tenure of the president in 2023, the democratic world will enquire how many APC states he came to office with, in 2015 general elections and how many he’s leaving behind. That will surely become the political legacy the president will be bequeathing on the party. I also want to submit that, the president continual indifference to the plight of APC candidates at various elections is emboldening oppositions, as well as strengthening their resolve and effrontery that, they could conveniently challenge and send APC packing, even at the centre during 2023 general elections. I’m sure the president wouldn’t like than to happen, but, his Excellency must have to change his approach.

Let me also submit through the instrumentality of this medium that, all APC governors that were alleged.
