Lionel Messi has equaled Cristiano Ronaldo’s La Liga hat-trick record after firing another treble in Barcelona’s 5-0 thumping of Levante on Sunday.
In his 300th match in Spain’s top-flight, Messi added to Neymar’s opener before adding a third in the 59th minute as Luis Enrique’s side continued to dominate the match.
Messi then completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot in the 65th minute before Luis Suarez added the gloss with a fifth goal courtesy of a bicycle kick.
The win means Barcelona are now back to within a point of La Liga leaders Real Madrid, who defeated Deportivo La Coruna 2-0 on Saturday.
Barcelona boss Luis Enrique said that “Messi makes us enjoy ourselves to the maximum”, while Neymar simply added: “Messi is spectacular.”
Messi has 31 hat-tricks in all competitions for Barcelona, sharing the record for a Spanish club held by former Athletic Bilbao forward Telmo Zarra. Ronaldo has 27 for Real, reports ESPN Sports.
