Missing Budget: Buhari Urges Nigerians to Channel All Enquiries to NASS, As He Denies Budget Recall

President Muhammadu Buhari has said the missing 2016 appropriation bill is not in his possession, urging Nigerians to direct all enquiries about the document to “appropriate quarters.”

The budget was reported missing on Tuesday afternoon after lawmakers, who just returned from recess,

Reacting to the development in a statement tweeted by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Garba Shehu, the president said once a budget has been proposed, it immediately ceases to be the property of the presidency.

“By tradition, once the budget is submitted, it ceases to be our property.”

The President said copies of the budget have been submitted to both chambers of the National Assembly.

“The copies in their hundreds have been delivered to both chambers of the National Assembly.”

He therefore urged Nigerians to approach “appropriate quarters” for the document.

“Enquiries as to where it is should be directed to the appropriate quarters. Best regards.”

The statement added that contrary to raging speculation, the administration has not surreptitiously withdrawn the budget, saying only the president has the authority to withdraw budget after it has been proposed.

“Nobody except the President can withdraw the budget. As far as we know, he hasn’t done that.”
