The Coalition of Civil Society Organization, Kwara State chapter has called for the establishment of Community Defense Committees to tackle the spate of insecurity in the country.
The NGO said the vigilance groups should be encouraged and funded to serve as security enforcement sub units in every community and neighborhood with membership drawn from residents of each community.
The spokesman of the organization in Kwara State, Comrade Abubakar Masambo, made the call in Ilorin on Monday as part of activities to commemorate National Day of Action Against Insecurity and Hopelessness in Nigeria.
The group also seeks an end to arbitrary sacking of workers across the country and immediate compliance with the National Minimum Wage Act by all employers of labour in the public and private sector.
Masambo said the educational, housing and health sectors should be properly funded.
“A pro- people policing plane to secure the lives and properties of all citizens must be adopted.
“The arrest and prosecution of perpetrators of violence against the people and payment of compensation to victims should be carried out.
“All contemplation of increasing energy cost (fuel and electricity prices) be terminated immediately to ensure the sustenance of social peace and improvement of security situation in the country,” he said.
He identified high level of crime and insecurity as the fall out of the level of unemployment and the collapse of livelihood of many people in the country.
