The Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) Limited has again demonstrated its commitment to environmental sustainability by engaging in various clean-up exercises in Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Port-Harcourt to mark the 2015 World Environmental Day.
Uzo Odenigbo, Head of Public Affairs and Communications, Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) Limited said, “The World Environment Day is a great opportunity to reinforce our commitment for a sustainable future and NBC Limited is partnering with Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA and the State Ministry of Environment to clean up Oyingbo Market in Ebute Metta. Other communities where the Company is carrying out similar cleaning exercises include a Mega Distribution Centre in Mushin, Lagos, Jabi Lake, a leisure park in Abuja, Slaughter Market, a popular abattoir in Port-Harcourt and a Tannery Dumpsite in Challawa, Kano State”. He added that the initiatives are in line with the 2015 Global Theme for World Environment Day – ‘Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care.’
Speaking to stakeholders during the clean-up exercise in Oyingbo Market in Lagos, Mr. Ola Oresanya, Managing Director, LAWMA, noted that NBC Limited always stands out on innovative ideas, adding that the clean-up exercises were initiatives the Company should sustain. Other state and federal environmental protection and waste management agencies that supported the clean-up exercises across the locations were the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agencies (NESREA) and the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) Dr. Ahmed Kasim, Zonal Director for NESREA in Kano commended NBC for its efforts in environmental sustainability, emphasizing the importance for waste segregation and classification and the need to recycle waste to become wealth.
Also expressing his appreciation to the Company for the exercise at the tannery dumpsite, Director of Medical and Health Care Service from MOE and Traditional Chief, SarkinTsaftar Kano, AlhajiJafaruGwarzo expressed his surprised at the level of environmental degradation at the Tannery dumpsite in Kano and that reassured the organization and the community of the commitment by the relevant environmental authorities to take necessary actions to protect the environment.
The 2015 World Environment Day was a unique opportunity for employee volunteering as over 200 Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) Limited employees took part in the exercise to make a difference in host communities.
There is an urgent need for a clean environment, getting people to live with planetary boundaries and ensuring a healthy future. NBC’s gesture in different parts of the country was part of the biggest global call and mobilization for action towards environmental sustainability.
