The leaders of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), and Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) have declared full support for Local Government autonomy.

The leaders of the four unions said this in a joint statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja after a meeting with the President of the NLC, Ayuba Wabba, on Monday at the Labour House, Abuja.

The meeting was convened to address some concerns raised by NUT & MHWUN with respect to the ongoing agitation by NULGE for LG autonomy in Nigeria.

They said after deliberations and proper understanding of the issues, the three unions agreed to support Local Government Autonomy in Nigeria.

The unions, in the statement, said that existing agencies such as UBEC, SUBEBs, LGEAs should be strengthened and empowered to play their roles and discharge their functions, with all the rights, structures, duties, functions, privileges and obligations clearly spelt out as is the case with the federal and state governments.

The statement was signed by NLC President, Wabba; NULGE President Ibrahim Khaleel; NUT President, Michael Alogba Olukoya, and   MHWUN President Biobelemoye Joy Josiah.
